Psquare Peter, Paul Okoye’s first solo songs are emotional but incomplete
Paul Okoye and Peter Okoye are currently going through the processes of a split. The twin brothers have continued to hug the headlines with as little as any activity which they do solo. (Key word: solo).
Both stars
have moved through the stages of breakups, running through internal
rife, to social media squabbles and subs. They are now at the stage of
solo endeavors, and have put their first foot forward in releasing new
material.
Pulse Music reviews both projects, their artistic direction, and details their merits and demerits.
The
bad boy of the group, it was Peter Okoye who drew first blood and
sounded the battle cry that has led to this split. He rebelled against
the leadership of elder brother, Jude Okoye, drew out Paul from his
often calm, and amiable demeanor and forced his hand into choosing
sides. He has also been proactive all through this split, staying one
step ahead of the gang and taking control of his destiny.
“Look
into my eyes” is a song of rebellion and statement of his superiority.
The singer combines introspection and arrogance on a VTEK-produced beat
to produce a song which is mildly entertaining and still captures his
defiance, and refusal to go with the flow.
“They wanna know my freak mode, they feel me everytime I do an intro…” he belts off the opening lines, before reaching the hook which is an invitation into his present sorrow: “Look into my eyes…tell me what you see..”
Here
is Peter crooning his heart out, and maintaining a defiant air. The
quality of the music is not exactly an improvement in their joint
discography. If anything, this is okay, serving to mark the perilous
time in which they have all brought themselves into.
Paul
Okoye is reactionary. The singer and widely regarded ‘cool-head’ of
Psquare is still playing true to his anciently-perceived views.
Here
was a man who was thrust into his current position by the hothead of
his twin, who had to choose between joining the revolution with Peter
and sticking to the old and trusted guidance of Jude Okoye. He chose the
old ways, pitched his tent, and stared as Peter went solo.
He
is yet to choose a solo name for his newfound career, and all of these
has made him look to heaven, where the departed soul of their parents
reside. He wishes they were here to calm the tide.
‘Call Heaven’ reads
more like an interlude, than a full song. The track runs for just over a
minute, and packs a huge chunk of that time with background sounds of a
sobbing Paul who pulls the emotional strings.
The piano supplies percussion, as he starts his heart-tugging “Make somebody please go heaven, make I tell my mama say e don happen…”
Paul further calls directly and opines that there would be no split, if they were alive. “If to say una dey for everything wey dey happen today, e for be say una go intervene, cause right now everything na play.”
A
lot can’t be said about the quality of the song. Paul’s vocal range and
mastery creates a dark beauty to engage listeners. He is the singer of
the pair and that is evident on this mini-song.
Round 1 is gone, and the true winner are the fans who get entertained by new music.
